A. Trong trích dẫn

Khi chúng ta sử dụng trích dẫn của người khác trong lời nói, ta thường dùng ngữ điệu bằng và sau đó là ngữ điệu xuống cho đơn vị lời nói cuối cùng trong trích dẫn. Điều này cho thấy rằng chúng ta chỉ đơn giản là tường thuật những từ đó và không đưa ra cách diễn đạt về những gì đã nói:

B. Chuẩn bị cho trích dẫn

Ngữ điệu bằng cũng thường được sử dụng trên động từ tường thuật (ví dụ: clain, ask, argue) đi trước một trích dẫn. Thông thường, ta sẽ lên giọng ở động từ này, nghỉ 1 lúc, và sau đó là lên giọng tiếp ở từ đầu tiên của trích dẫn. Điều này chỉ rằng những gì được nói tiếp theo là một trích dẫn chứ không phải là một cách diễn đạt:

Chúng ta cũng có thể sử dụng ngữ điệu bằng, lên giọng và tạm dừng để khiến người nghe dự đoán hoặc hồi hộp chờ đợi, buộc người nghe tập trung đặc biệt vào những gì tiếp theo (xem thêm Bài 55C). Lưu ý rằng những gì xuất hiện sau khoảng tạm dừng có thể bắt bằng ngữ điệu cao, trung bình hoặc thấp:

Now read the sentences aloud. Quote the people's words using level tones and a final falling tone. Then listen and compare what you said with the recording.

60.2 Listen to these extracts from a news broadcast. In which do you think the highlighted part is a quotation, and in which do you think it is a paraphrase of what the original speaker said? Underline ‘Quotation’ or ‘Paraphrase’

EXAMPLE: The Foreign Office has been accused of breaking its promises on support for refugees by a senior United Nations official. Quotation / Parapbrase

60.3 Think of a possible ending for each of these sentences from talks by scientists, and write it in the space. Then read the sentences aloud, using pause and intonation as described in C in order to build suspense. (Examples are given on the recording.)
