A. Bổ sung thông tin

- Khi chúng ta sử dụng một cụm danh từ để thêm thông tin về cụm danh từ trước đó (và cả hai đều đề cập đến cùng một người hoặc một vật), chúng ta thường xuống giọng (giảm cao độ) (step-down) và nói cụm danh từ thứ hai với một âm tương đối thấp trong đơn vị nói của chính nó. Việc xuống giọng bắt đầu ở từ được nhấn đầu tiên của đơn vị nói này. Trong các ví dụ này, các step-down được đánh dấu bằng dấu mũi tên hướng xuống:

- Các cụm danh từ (thông tin chính và thông tin bổ sung) có ngữ điệu xuống nếu chúng là tin mới; có ngữ điệu lên hoặc xuống-lên (fall-rise) nếu chúng không phải là tin mới (người nói giả định rằng người nghe đã biết thông tin (xem bài 39).)

- Cùng 1 ngữ điệu thường được sử dụng trong cụm danh từ đầu tiên và trong đơn vị lời nói xuống giọng (step-down). Tuy nhiên, điều này không phải bất biến

 

B. Kết thúc chủ đề

Việc xuống giọng cũng được sử dụng, đặc biệt là trong bài phát biểu được chuẩn bị, để cho thấy rằng chúng ta đang kết thúc một chủ đề. 58.2 Choose a noun phrase from the box to add to each of these news extracts and indicate its appropriate position with a line (/).

Now listen and check your answers. Then say the sentences aloud. Make sure you use a step-down at the beginning of the added information and the same tone (either falling or fall-rising) in the added information and the previous noun phrase.

58.3 A tour guide in Prague is explaining to tourists what they can see on their trip down the Vitava River. Here is part of what she says. Listen and put a (*) before a word with a step-up making a new topic and a (**) before a word with a step-down ending a topic

On your (*) right we're passing the beautiful National Theatre, built in the mid 1800s and one of the most important Czech cultural institutions. If you want to see opera or ballet in Prague, that’s the place to go. We're now passing under one of the best-known bridges in the world, the Charles Bridge. It was built in the 13th century, and has 75 statues along its sides. Over on the left, up on the hill, is Prague Castle, the home of Czech kings throughout the ages and now the seat of the President of the Czech Republic. You can also see the spires of Saint Vitus Cathedral, where most of the Czech kings are buried. To your right now is the Rudolfinum, a concert hall...
