Khi chúng ta tham gia vào một cuộc trò chuyện, ta thường cho người đối diện biết rằng mình đang theo dõi những gì họ đang nói và muốn họ tiếp tục. Một số âm thanh, từ và cụm từ thường được sử dụng để làm điều này, thường là với âm điệu lên. Những từ này bào gồm: mm, ubub, mhm, okay, right, yeah, I see:

A: So how do I make a recording with this?

B: Well, you plug the microphone in this socket in the back [A: MHM (rise)] and you make sure that it’s switched on and that the battery’s working [A: RIGHT (rise)]. Then you press the play button and the pause button at the same time [A: OKAY (rise)] and then check that the recording level is okay [A: uHUH (rise)]. - Khi những từ này được dùng với ngữ điệu xuống, chúng thường diễn tả rằng chúng ta nghĩ người đối diện đã nói xong hoặc ta muốn thay phiên là người nói.

B: ... but make sure you don’t move this switch.

A: RIGHT (fall). What does it do?

B: It changes the voltage setting.

A: I SEE (fall). And what would happen exactly?

- Một số từ và cụm từ được thêm vào câu khẳng định với mục đích kiểm tra xem điều đó có đúng không; hoặc có được hiểu hay chấp nhận không. Những từ đó gồm: alright, you know, okay, you see, right:

I’ll be over later, alRIGHT (rise)?

He was really odd, you KNOW (rise)?

- CHúng thường được theo sau bởi các từ và cụm từ trong phần A, thường là với ngữ điệu xuống, nhằm chỉ ra rằng  ‘I have understood’ hoặc ‘I agree’:

A: I phoned Jerry straight away. He’s a doctor, you SEE (rise)?
B: RIGHT (fall).
A: So I thought he’d be able to help.

A: Yow’re not to touch it, OKAY (rise)?
B: OKAY (fall).

- Để tỏ ra sự hào hứng nhằm khuyến khích người nói tiếp tục, ta cũng có thể dùng những câu hỏi ngắn như: Did you? Were they? Haven't we?, với ngữ điệu xuống-lên (fall-rise):

A: Saw Helen in town today.

B: DID you (fall-rise)?

A: She said she’s bought the flat [B: MHM (rise)] though she won’t be able to move in until next year.

B: WON'T she (fall-rise)?

A: No, some problem with the other people moving out. |B: RIGHT (rise)] Apparently they’re going to ...

- Ta cũng có thể dùng Really? với ngữ điệu xuống-lên (fall-rise) với mục đích tương tự (Unit 51):

A: Did you hear there’s been another earthquake in Iran?

B: REAlly (fall-rise)?

A: Yeah, and another bad one, too.

52.1 Listen and take B's part in this conversation. You will only hear the A parts. Use a falling tone in each case to show that you agree or have understood.

A: The coach leaves at six, alright?

B: OK (fall)

A: From outside the museum, you know?

B: Right.

A: You wanted two tickets, right?

B: Yeah.

A: That’s $50, okay?

B: Mhm.

A: It costs more at the weekend, you know?

B: Mm.

A: "Cause we have to pay the driver more, you see?

B: Uhuh.

52.2 Listen to the conversation in exercise 52.1 again. This time the A parts have been left out. Say them aloud, using a rising tone on each final phrase to check that B understands.

EXAMPLE You say The coach leaves at six, alright (rise)?

You hear Okay.

52.3 Listen to this conversation. Two people are talking about a proposed new road through the countryside. Are the words and phrases in bold said with a falling tone (put ‘fall’ in the bracket), rising tone (rise), or fall-rising tone (fall-rise)?

A: So it'll go past those trees ...

B: Mhm ( ).

A: ... across that footpath ...

B: Yeah ( ).

A: ... and down across the top of that field.

B: Right ( ), and who owns that?

A: All the fields around here are part of a big farm.

B: Uhuh ( ).

A: Belongs to the farmer who lives in that white house.

B: Right ( ).

A: Of course, he won’t be happy about the plans.

B: Won’t he ( )?

A: No, I doubt that he’ll want to sell any of his land.

B: Okay ( ). So what'll happen then?

A: I suppose the council could force him to sell.

B: Really ( )?

A: But that wouldn’t be popular with the local community.

B: I see ( ).

52.4 Listen to the conversation in exercise 52.3 again. This time the B parts have been left out. Say them aloud, using the same tones on the words in bold.
