- Hầu hết các âm tiết đều có chứa nguyên âm. Tuy nhiên, đôi khi một âm tiết chỉ chứa duy nhất 1 phụ âm. Trong từ điển, bạn sẽ thường thấy các ký hiệu I dưới phụ âm, hoặc ^ə trước phụ âm. Những phụ âm như thế này được gọi là âm tiết phụ âm (syllabic consonants).

- Ta có thể phát âm âm tiết phụ âm như là một âm tiết bình thường với 1 nguyên âm /ə/ và 1 (nhiều) phụ âm. Mặc dù âm tiết phụ âm được phát âm tự nhiên và lưu loát hơn.

article = /ˈɑːtɪkl/ hoặc ˈɑːtɪkəl/

listen = /lɪsən/ hoặc /lɪsn/

B.

- Âm tiết phụ âm /l/ thường có trong âm tiết không được đánh dấu trọng âm, đằng sau phụ âm sau:

/t/	bottle, little, hospital, pistol	/s/	hassle, parcel, whistle, colossal
/d/	saddle, muddle, handle, pedal	/z/	puzzle, drizzle, dazzle, hazel
/p/	couple, people, example, principal	/k/	knuckle, article, classical, comical
/b/	able, trouble, global, jumble	/n/	communal, channel, tunnel, panel

Đa số các phụ âm này được phát âm là –le, một số thì lại được phát âm là –al, -el, -ol

- Âm tiết phụ âm /n/ thường có trong âm tiết không được đánh dấu trọng âm, đằng sau phụ âm sau:

/t/	button, rotten, threaten, kitten	/f/	often, deafen, stiffen, soften
/d/	sadden, widen, garden, pardon	/v/	seven, given, eleven, proven
/p/	happen, deepen, open, sharpen	/θ/	marathon, python, strengthen, lengthen
/s/	listen, loosen, comparison, person	/ʃ/	fashion, action, politician, musician
/z/	cousin, horizon, poison, prison	/ʒ/	illusion, collision, occasion, precision

 

Hầu hết các phụ âm này được phát âm là –en, -on, -ian, -ion

Những từ kết thúc bằng –sm thường sẽ có âm tiết phụ âm /m/. VD: Buddhism, capitalism, criticism, journalism, mannerism, socialism, chasm, enthusiasm

- Lưu ý: Các dạng rút gọn như: didn't, haven't, shouldn't, wouldn't, etc. có dạng âm tiết phụ âm ‘nt’: haven't = /hævnt/ or /hævənt/

 C 

  Một số từ sẽ có 2 âm tiết phụ âm: conditional, diagonal, general, literal, national, veteran. Nhưng lưu ý rằng những từ này có thể phát âm theo các cách khác nhau:

diagonal = /daɪˈæɡənəl/ hoặc /daɪˈæɡənl/ hoặc /daɪˈæɡnəl/ hoặc /daɪˈæɡnl/

D

- Khi –ing được thêm vào sau động từ có âm tiết phụ âm (handling, troubling, happening, gardening), phụ âm + -ing thường được xem như 1 âm tiết. Âm tiết phụ âm sẽ là phụ âm đầu tiên của âm tiết cuối cùng:

handle /ˈhænd^əl/             - handling /ˈhændlɪŋ/

happen /hæp^ən/              - happening /ˈhæpnɪŋ/

Lưu ý là âm tiết phụ âm có thể được phát âm như nguyên âm /ə/: /ˈhændəlɪŋ/; /ˈhæpənɪŋ/
