- Khi cụm động từ có 2 dấu nhấn âm được dùng trong đoạn hội thoại, thì cả động từ và phần particle thường được đánh dấu nhấn từ:

,hang, a'round                   It was freezing cold, so I didn’t want to HANG aROUND.

,get a'long                        My brother and I don’t really GET aLONG together.

,call 'back                         I'm busy at the moment. Can I CALL you BACK?

,write ‘down                      I'll never remember the number. Can you WRITE it DOWN for me?

- Lưu ý là đại từ đứng giữa động từ và particle không được nhấn

- Tuy nhiên, phần particle thường không được đánh dấu nhấn từ trong những trường hợp sau:

a. Khi danh từ đứng sau cụm động từ nhưng vẫn trong cùng 1 câu

Shall I WRITE down the NUMber for you?

b. khi ta muốn đặc biệt nhấn mạnh vào động từ

A: I can’t remember Trudi’s address.
B: Why didn’t you WRITE it DOWN?
A:  WROTE it down. (or: I DID write it down.)

c. khi có danh từ được nhấn mạnh giữa động từ và phần particle

Can you CALL the DOCtor back? He called about your test results.

but: I didn’t understand the message about these pills.
I’m going to CALL the doctor BACK.

- Cụm động từ có 3 từ thường có 2 dấu trọng âm. Dấu trọng âm phụ được đánh ở động từ và dấu trọng âm chính được đánh trên phần particle thứ nhất.

,look 'up to                     I'd always LOOKED UP to her.

,row ‘out of                     The dress was small and she soon GREW OUT of it.

,go ‘through with             When the time came to leave I couldn't GO THROUGH with it.

,put 'up with                    I was finding it hard to PUT UP with him.

- Không giống như cụm động từ 2 từ có 2 dấu trọng âm, cụm động từ 3 từ thường có dấu nhấn từ ở từ đầu tiên và từ thứ 2; bất chấp việc có danh từ (object) đứng sau cụm động từ nhưng vẫn ở trong câu.

,cut 'back on                 I’ve CUT BACK on it.

I’ve CUT BACK on SMOKing.

I've CUT back on SMOKing.

- Rất nhiều danh từ ghép được tạo thành từ cụm động từ 2 dấu nhấn. Những danh từ này thường có dấu trọng âm ở phần đầu tiên:

‘mix-up                          I got the times MIXED UP.

There was a MIX-up over times.

‘warm-up                       It’s important to WARM UP before exercise.

He hurt his ankle during the WARM-up.

‘washout                       The tennis match was WASHED OUT.

It was a WASHout.

20.1 Listen and underline the prominent syllable(s) in each part in bold. All the phrasal  verbs are two-stress phrasal verbs but sometimes the particle is non-prominent.

EXAMPLE I’m busy now. Can you call me back?

1 Have you handed your homework in yet?

2 The.fire’s on. Don’t forget to turn it off before you go out.

3 At the stream I rolled my trousers up and paddled across.

4 We don’t have much money, but I’m sure we'll get by.

5 My father and I didn’t really get along.

6 My handwriting is terrible, as my teachers are always pointing out.

7 The painting suddenly fell off the wall.

8 If any letters come for me, can you send them on?

20.2 You will hear seven questions. After each question, press ‘pause’ and say one of the responses in the box. (Think carefully about prominence in the phrasal verb.) When you press ‘play’ again you will hear the correct answer. (Note that all the responses include three-word phrasal verbs.)

If I can come up with the money.

No, but I don’t know how Pm going to get out of it.

We’ll come on to it next semester.

Well, first, we should do away with private schools.

No, she just walked off with it.

Yes, I think he’s hoping to put in for a promotion.

I’ve only just sent away for them.

EXAMPLE: You hear: Are we going to study ecology soon?

You reply: We'll COME ON to it next semester.

20.3 Complete each (a) part of these pairs of sentences using one of the phrasal verbs in the box. (You may need to change the form of the verb.) Then form a compound noun from each phrasal verb to complete each corresponding (b) part.

b United Nations troops supervised the handover.

Now listen and check your answers. Then say the sentences aloud, making sure you put prominence in the correct place in the words you have written.

3 A: You don’t really want the job, do you? B: No, but I don’t know how I’m going to GET OUT of it.

4 A: Have the holiday brochures arrived yet? B: I’ve only just SENT aWAY for them.

5 A: Steve’s working really hard at the moment. B: Yes, I think he’s hoping to PUT in for a proMOtion. (‘... PUT IN for a proMOtion’ would also be possible)

6 A: So how do you suggest improving education in the country? B: Well, first, we should DO aWAY with PRIvate SCHOOLS. (... DO away with PRIvate SCHOOLS’ would also be possible)
