- Trong cuốn sách này, chúng tôi sử dụng hai thuật ngữ có liên quan nhưng khác nhau: stress (dấu trọng âm) và prominence (dấu nhấn từ) . Hầu hết các từ điển đều cung cấp cách phát âm của các từ cũng chỉ ra âm tiết nào có trọng âm. Ví dụ, CALD cho thấy từ party và remember có dấu trọng âm trên 1 âm tiết:

- Dấu trọng âm của từ và dấu nhấn mạnh từ thường không giống nhau. Nếu từ có 1 âm tiết thì dấu trọng âm và dấu nhấn mạnh từ giống nhau. Còn nếu từ có 2 âm tiết thì dấu nhấn từ thường nằm ở âm tiết có dấu trọng âm chính.

It was controVERsial.                      She goes to KINdergarten.

- Dấu nhấn từ có thể chuyển từ dấu trọng âm chính sang dấu trọng âm phụ nếu theo sau từ đó là một dấu nhấn từ khác, nhất là khi dấu nhấn từ đó nằm ở âm tiết đầu tiên.

She gave a CONtroversial ANswer.

- Đây đôi khi được gọi là sự dịch chuyển dấu trọng âm (stress shift). Sự dịch chuyển chỉ xảy ra khi dấu trọng âm phụ đứng trước dấu trọng âm chính. Vd:

,under'stand                      I UNderstand EVerything.

,disap'pointing                  It was a DISappointing OUTcome.

- Những từ có sự dịch chuyển dấu trọng âm như:

+ altogether, independent, indistinct, mediocre, satisfactory, university, weekend, worthwide.
+ một số từ chỉ nơi chốn có dấu trọng âm chính ở âm tiết cuối: Berlin, Kowloon, Montreal.
+ số có chứa chữ -teen: thir'teen, ,nine'teen và số có 2 phần: ,forty-'five, seventy-'eight.

Note: Một số từ có dấu trọng âm phụ ít khi có sự dịch chuyển này: approximation, correspondence, indecision, pronunciation.

Để nhấn mạnh hoặc tạo sự tương phản, các âm tiết với dấu trọng âm chính hoặc phụ có thể làm dấu nhấn từ. (Xem thêm Unit 47C)
